NDEBELE PATTERN
The Ndebele Patterns series was produced in South Africa during the artist’s residency in 2014. Focusing on the popular geometric patterns of the Ndebele tribe, which are often used to decorate their homes, Leuba creates a skewed perspective by taking a photograph of the reflection of the patterns on a glass mirror. A departure from her portrait series, Leuba abstracts an iconic cultural tradition to the point where it becomes an indecipherable grouping of colors and shapes. These patterns, historical symbols that originated in the 18th century, are transformed into a psychedelic vision.
